January 13th – March 10th, 2007In the tradition of feminist artists’ involvement in social justice, the La Art Girls have taken the feminine associations with the color pink as the springboard to political action. As part of the annual Pink Show in Santa Monica, the LA Art girls set up shop and sold custom made t-shirts expressing various ideas about feminism. The money was raised and donated to the organization Women for Afghan Women, an organization that provides education and safe houses for women and girls in Afghanistan. EXHIBITION: JANUARY 13 – MARCH 10, 2007
OPENING RECEPTION: SATURDAY, JANUARY 13 FROM 7-9 PM
ARENA 1 Gallery is pleased to present PINK III curated by Heather Harmon and Nicole Dungao as the first exhibition of 2007. “Pink” originally opened the Cartelle Gallery and is now presenting its third interpretation of a color that often eludes critical definition. The premise of the first Pink Show was to create a feeling reminiscent of the Rococo and the second was centered around works on canvas. The paintings of Jean Honoré Fragonard served as the inspiration.
Now the exhibition continues!
The participating artists differ from year to year and each new incarnation of Pink seeks to include a new curatorial voice. Pink changes the venue every year and seeks to add new perspectives. The curators want the viewer to be fully immersed in PINK – to illustrate the extraordinary range of interpretations dealing with a color that is serious, fresh, frivolous and a force to be reckoned with.
PINK III features sculpture, painting and installation with works by JIMI GLEASON, Robert Acuna, Wendy Adest, Daniele Albright & Stefan Lawrence, Maura Bendett, Shary Boyle, Thierry Feuz, Alejandro Gehry, Carrie Jenkins, Andy Moses, Katy Stone, Samantha Thomas, Peter Wu, Rosha Yaghmai and Almond Zigmund.
ARENA 1 is also delighted to announce a special performance by the LA Art Girls. This performance will take place on opening night around 8 pm and will be accompanied by the sale of one of a kind shirts. The proceeds of the shirt sales will benefit a charity supported by the LA Art Girls.
A percentage of exhibition sales will benefit the Susan Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. This is the first year the PINK exhibition has worked in conjunction with the foundation and we look forward to giving them continued support in the future.
