LACE and Art Platform, Benefit Art Auction

LACE and Art Platform, 2011 LACE Benefit Art Auction, Los Angeles, CA, April- May, 2011

My work was curated by Shana Nys Dambrot. One of my twenty minute performances was auctioned and purchased for $500 by my favorite couple and art collectors of the night.

You belong to one of the most enduring and celebrated centers for contemporary art in Los Angeles.  LACE supports artists who innovate, experiment, explore and risk.  Your patronage and participation have shaped us into the thriving institution that you see today.

It’s an incredible time to be a part of the LACE community. Please join us in supporting our programs by purchasing a LACE membership.

Not only have we presented an exceptional program in 2011, but through Pacific Standard Time, this year has exemplified the enduring impact of our mission to present some of the most compelling work from our very own community. Whether you are visiting the Hammer, MOCA or LACMA or another venue, every Pacific Standard Time exhibition focusing on contemporary art includes LACE alumni such as Eleanor Antin, Asco, Mike Kelley, UlyssesJenkins, William Leavitt and Paul McCarthy.

For our presentation, Los Angeles Goes Live , we intentionally invited artists from different generations includingCherie Gaulke, Jerri Allyn, Suzanne Lacy, James Luna and Ulysses Jenkins who were all active in Los Angeles in the 70s. The other commissioned artists: Heather Cassils, Liz Glynn, Ellina Kevorkian, OJO, Denise Uyehara andDorian Wood brought mid-career and emerging artists into the mix.

Artists at all stages have new, innovative ideas.  LACE makes space for the range.

Your support enables us to both celebrate this history as well as support the emerging voices of our time. Our first Performance Art Curator-in-Residence Dino Dinco chose to push the boundary between artist and audience in his series 3 x 6 x 3, which featured a circuit of three performance artists executing continuous live work for a rotating audience of six spectators over the course of three hours.

The most recent and final installment, 3 x 6 x 3 # 3, featured Samuel White riding a mechanical bull controlled by the audience with a 3-channel projection backdrop. Brian Getnick, Claire Cronin and Corey Fogel occupied the back hallway and serenaded each group. Then each audience went out the back door for Alejandra Beatriz Herrera Silva’s open-air performance in the parking lot.  Dinco resisted the pressure to define artistic success by audience numbers, instead focusing on the intensity of intimate experience between artist and audience.

Thanks to your generosity, LACE can boldly support these explorations.

LACE involves practicing artists at all stages of the research, development and presentation of its programs based on the belief that innovation comes through trusting their instincts.  What’s on the horizon?  LACE can connect you.

In the year ahead, your membership will entitle you to exclusive exhibition previews, lectures, and screenings that will deepen your appreciation of art in the company of the artists, curators, and art-lovers that have made Los Angeles such an incredible place.

I invite you to increase your support and become an Advocate member and enjoy reciprocal benefits at over 400 North American museums. Our most popular membership level, for only $100 all Advocate members receive free admission and other exclusive benefits at over 400 North American museums including MOCA, Orange County Museum of Art, Santa Barbara Museum of Art, SITE Santa Fe, and The Wexner Center for the Arts to name just a few.

Your membership—at any level—is an investment in maintaining LACE’s position as the premiere platform for developing some of the most challenging and engaging work in Los Angeles. For over 30 years LACE has remained steadfast in its mission, and with your continued support we will continue to thrive for decades to come.

Please accept my sincere thanks for your support. I wish you and your loved ones a happy and healthy holiday season.

Warmest regards,

Carol A. Stakenas

Executive Director
